Search for collagen and you find promises. Firmer skin, stronger hair. We don't make those promises, because they are not allowed. Below we explain how the rules work and what that is worth to you as a buyer.
There is a list, and collagen is not on it
One rule applies to food supplements across the European Union: you may only claim what appears in the EU register of nutrition and health claims, Regulation 1924/2006. Any statement about what a product does to your body is a health claim, even one that sounds gentle or cosmetic. "Helps hydrate the skin" falls under it just as much as "reduces wrinkles".
There are no claims for collagen in that register. The Dutch food and consumer product safety authority, the NVWA, is blunt about it: there are no permitted health claims for collagen.
Where the confusion comes from
A completely different regime applies to cosmetics you put on your skin, Regulation 1223/2009. There, with supporting evidence, you may say that a cream helps hydrate the skin. That regime does not apply to something you swallow. A collagen cream and a collagen powder therefore fall under different rules, even if the same ingredient is on the label.
Nor is there a separate category of "beauty claims" for supplements. That is an industry term, not a legal one.
The NVWA enforces this
In August 2025 the NVWA published the results of an inspection of thirty Dutch webshops selling collagen. More than eighty per cent were in breach of the rules. The companies involved had to change their copy, and the NVWA announced follow-up inspections with escalating sanctions.
The breaches cited concerned health claims that are not permitted, and medical claims, which are prohibited altogether.
The only route to a skin claim
There is one approved claim that comes close, and it is not about collagen but about vitamin C: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. You may only use it if the product contains a significant amount of vitamin C, at least fifteen per cent of the daily reference intake per serving, and that is stated on the label.
Our powder consists of one ingredient: collagen. There is no vitamin C in it, so this claim does not apply to us. Brands that do carry a skin claim have usually added vitamin C. That is a product decision, not a copy decision.
What we do tell you
Facts sell too. This is what we say about our products, and all of it can be checked:
- Type 1 hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptides)
- Origin: Earth from beef, from the German producer GELITA (VERISOL), Sea from fish, from the French producer Weishardt (NATICOL)
- Produced in Europe under ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000
- One ingredient per jar, no flavourings, colourings or sugar
- 300 grams per jar, enough for 60 servings of 5 grams
- Our dosage: 10 grams a day for twelve weeks, then 5 grams

What you do with that is up to you.
What to look for with other sellers
Four questions that quickly tell you something about a collagen webshop:
- Is there a concrete promise about skin, hair, nails or joints? That is not allowed to be there.
- Is a disease or condition named? That is even further out of bounds.
- Does it say where the collagen comes from and which type it is? Type 1 from fish or beef, type 2 from chicken.
- Does it say how many grams are in a daily serving? Without that figure two jars cannot be compared. Many powders sit at 2.5 grams per scoop, we are at 5 grams.
In closing
A brand that promises you nothing may sound less appealing than a brand that guarantees radiant skin within a month. But that second brand is not allowed to say it, and knows it. We would rather tell you exactly what is in the jar.
